As I look back over all of the things I learned about instructional coaching, I feel that I have only begun. This class has allowed me to put into motion everything that we have been discussing and debating. It is like the perfect puzzle piece to the other puzzle pieces that I already have (what I have learned from my other classes).
I learned the most from my coaching experiences. It is so easy to say, “this is what we’re going to do” or “this is fun, let’s try it!” but that is not really coaching. One has to break down what is happening and what needs to happen; whether it be a discipline/management issue, content issue or technology issue. But when identifying and reporting your findings, you have to have finesse and a delicate touch, or you’ll lose who you are trying to help.
This process has also allowed for much unintended, yet needed self-discovery of what I do in my own classes. It has helped me see where I need to improve or what I need to change to be more beneficial for my students. Going forward, I hope to have the opportunity to “coach” other and also to continue to reflect and identify areas in my own classes that need improvement or to be revamped.
